Breakfast buffet at Tom's
Monday, August 10, 2009Me! In wordsWe crossed out another on our continental buffet breakfasts in Bangalore list. This one was a Tom's, a quaint old restaurant opposite Johnson Market. Its decor and outer facade is a tribute to the Anglo-Indian community and you are bound to find quite a few amble their way in here.
The beginning and end of the buffet table
So there we were at the doorsteps of this restaurant - The buffet table was a small one and the variety was not what you see in other places... It started off with the Indian fare of Idli and Vadas with sambhar and chutney. While the vadas were big, hot and crisp... I found that the idlis were not really fresh and some were downright stale. They had a crisp outer edge that generally comes from reheating idlis. The sambhar was spicy and the chutney average.
Hot vadas and insipid idlis
There was tribute to the Kerala breakfast table with appams. These were to go with a vegetable stew and a chicken stew. Both the stews had the same basic gravies with the chicken one having a smattering more of turmeric and ground pepper. The appams were average and not really cotton-soft as is tradition.
Appams with chicken and vegetable stew
This was followed by the breakfasts standards of toast with butter and jam, omelettes, fried (but cold) chicken sausages, corn flakes and milk, watermelon juice and the usual tea, coffee and milk.
The continental offerings
This was one nice watermelon juice
The buffet is priced at Rs 120 a head which is not really worth the money. This is considering the fare at Isys in Jayanagar was much more extensive for Rs 110. Its the kind of place you go to when you have run out of options and don't really care what you eat as long as you do. Its the type of breakfast you will forget by lunch time. The toilets are clean and segregated.
