Prawn masala - improvised!!!

Wednesday, August 05, 2009Me! In words

I had some prawns with me the other day and was dying to make something that was not run-of-the-mill. Totally fed up of my recipes of prawns in tomato sauce and potatoes and the Thai prawn with lemon rind. So this time, on mum's advice I decided to alter the fish biryani recipe from her cookbook.

The recipe is actually the base masala for the fish of fish biryani. I just took out the fish and added prawns and dropped out the part where I would have to make a biryani. So here goes

Ingredients: half to 3/4 kg prawns cleaned, an inch piece of ginger, 10-12 flakes of garlic, 2 tbsp of poppy seeds (khus khus), juice of 1 lime, 1 tsp of mustard seeds, 5 green chillies, 1/2 cup each of mint leaves and coriander leaves, 1/2 to 3/4 cup of curds

The ingredients

Prawns in marinade

Grind together all the ingredients except of course the prawns. Marinate the prawns in this masala for around an hour. The more time in marination, the better. In a non-stick pan, heat up some oil and fry a 1 large chopped onion. When the onions are nice and transparent, put in the prawns. Cook till almost done. Add in the curds and mix well. Cook till done. This goes well with the usual meal of rice and dal.

The final dish
