Expensive Konkan/Malnad

Coral - Ocean Pearl, Mangalore

Saturday, November 27, 2010Me! In words

I left my hometown of Mangalore for studies and work around 12 years ago. When I was still home, the restaurant scene was pretty dismal with just a handful of them like Royal Durbar, Hao Hao, Chef's and Pentagon ruling the roost. Now so many years later, things have improved drastically. One such pleasant place which all my cousins recommended was the restaurant attached to Ocean Pearl, a really nice looking hotel. The name of the restaurant - Coral, tends to be forgotten as everyone refers to it as Ocean Pearl. I visited this place with my parents and junior when I went to Mangalore in October. The restaurant is housed on a massive floor space with tables nicely spread across and an stylish ambiance, something that Mangalore is slowly getting used to.

A name that is hardly used

We began with a round of lime juices in varying options of sweet, salt and sweet and salt, soda/sans soda. To go with this we also asked for a squid ghee roast. The lime juices were nice and freshly squeezed, not the concentrate variety. The squid ghee roast was ghee laden, the squid nice and fresh and from the battle of the forks on the one plate, it was quite obvious that we all liked what we were eating.

For main course, we asked for neer dosas for Anoushka (can't seem to locate the photo) and a Chicken Malabar to go with it. This chicken was as red as an apple all thanks to Kashmiri chillis. The coconut was ample as were the curry leaves. For us, we decided on a round of kori rotti and a bowl of plain rice to eat up all the curry. The Kori Rotti was typically Bunt and heavy on the coconut. Its great when it goes down, but keep a few antacids ready, the heart burn you get in a few hours is no joke. For desserts, the choice was the run of the mill and so was the choice of my parents - Fruit salad with ice cream.

The restaurant is pleasant place to head to when you need to treat family. This meal came to around Rs 1000 and was a really fair deal. The loos are really clean.
