New Year's Eve Sushi party at Yvonne's

Monday, January 03, 2011Me! In words

The first post of the New Year. Bangalore's Restaurants has entered its third year and what better way to round off 2010 than with a sushi party. Yvonne, a colleague of Sudhakar's was hosting a sushi party at her home. A friend of her's, Eugeniy Kharitonov who works at Japanese restaurant in England was the object of my attention for the time that we were there. I was getting to see sushi being made from scratch and I documented it more as a tutorial for myself. Eugeniy had the sushi rice cooked and mixed with vinegar, the mushrooms, avocado, bell peppers, lettuce and cucumbers all sliced and ready. The prawns he told me were skewered and then boiled. This allows them to remain straight and not curl up.

There was a lot of other food as well on the table - Chicken wings with ginger preserve, fried pork - this you made parcels with lettuce, a spicy chutney-like spread and spring onions, a bengali fish fillet dish where the fish was marinated in mustard and khus-khus and steamed in banana leaves. There was also a massive jungle fowl that was roasted and had the carver burst out into a sweat. Of course there was a lot of booze as well but I was happy with a couple of breezers and some warm sake that came from Japan and generously found its way to the party.

I couldn't think of a better way to spend my New Year's eve than watching my favorite dish in the making. I have made an attempt in the videos and slide shows to show you what I thoroughly enjoyed that day.
